Moderator Ryan Kuhn (Trinity College, class of 1970) introduces The Draft at Trinity, a discussion held on Zoom on April 22, 2021 at 4pm ET. The discussion was organized by the Trinity Class of 1970 Reunion Committee as part of its 50th Reunion celebration. Appearing on camera were two special guests, George Higgins, Professor of Psychology (retired) -- at the time the school’s sole (and first) student counselor -- and Tom Weiner (Trinity class of 1971). Weiner wrote a book Called to Serve: Stories of Men and Women Confronted by the Vietnam War Draft, which contains 63 interviews he conducted with men and women who came of age while the Vietnam War raged and were affected by the draft -- whether they somehow beat it, or chose whether to serve, leave the country, apply for conscientious objection or risk jail. Additional comments are provided by several other members of the Trinity College class of 1970.
Read a brief interview of Professor George Higgins, who describes his encounters with the military draft during the 1960s. Higgins was interviewed by Tom Weiner (class of 1971), as part of research for his book Called to Serve (Amherst, MA: Levellers Press, 2011).
