Moderator Philip Khoury (Trinity College, class of 1971) introduces An Evening with Dr. Eric Manheimer ’71,
a discussion held on Zoom on November 1, 2021, at 6pm ET. The
discussion was organized by the Trinity Class of 1971 Reunion Committee
as part of its 50th Reunion celebration.
Eric will discuss his life and career in the world of medicine and in television. Eric served for more than thirteen years as Medical Director at Bellevue Hospital and Clinical Professor at the New York University School of Medicine. He is an Internist who trained at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York in Internal Medicine. Following his Chief Residency there, he moved to Hanover, New Hampshire where he was a member of Dartmouth Medical School and the Hitchcock Clinic for many years.
Eric has had a long interest in international health working in Haiti and Pakistan and in medical anthropology, history, the social sciences and literature particularly of Latin America. Along with his wife, Diana Taylor, who is a University Professor at New York University, Eric travels extensively in Latin America and Mexico. He has two children and one grandchild, who was born at Bellevue.
In 2012, Eric published a memoir titled Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital, which laid the foundation for the NBC drama series New Amsterdam. The series’ main character is based on Eric’s career at Bellevue. Eric is a producer and writer for the series. Season 1 of New Amsterdam has streamed on Netflix. Season 2 and 3 are available on Neon and Sky Go.
